About our Council election campaign 2024
The Port Phillip Bicycle Users Group is supporting candidates who support active travel, including cycling.
Our actions will include:
engaging candidates and our fellow residents
administering a survey on active travel and inviting candidates to fill it in
evaluating the record of incumbent candidates
publishing a scorecard of candidates, based on their survey responses and their record in the community
joining other community groups in the Streets People Love campaign
sharing information on social media
asking for donations to support a local campaign under the Streets People Love banner
Streets people love campaign
The Streets People Love campaign is being run by community groups all over Victoria with an interest in safer walking and cycling and other issues around creating streets that build community and enable people to safely move around that community. It is a collaborative effort 100% run by volunteers and the goal is to help people identify candidates for the Council elections in October who also support these goals. Campaign partners include Walk On Merribek, Streets Alive Glen Eira, PECAN, and the Bicycle Network, among many others.
Our survey questions
We ask:
Public transport:
Do you support the priority actions in the Integrated Transport Strategy that improve public transport?
Do you support the construction of accessible tram stops?
Supporting walking, cycling and other micromobility options
Do you support the introduction of 30km/hr zones in areas of high pedestrian activity?
Do you support the priority actions in the Integrated Transport Strategy that promote walking, including supporting pedestrian projects that create safe, high amenity walking routes and reduce barriers to crossing major roads?
Protected bicycle lanes keep people on bikes safe; encourage more bike riding; and help to get scooters off the footpaths, to the benefit of pedestrians. Do you support the installation of protected bicycle lanes along the routes in the Integrated Transport Strategy 2018-2028?
Specifically: will you support the construction of protected bike lanes on Inkerman St?
Specifically: will you support the construction of protected bike lanes on the Kerferd Rd--Albert Rd corridor?
Specifically: will you support the construction of protected bike lanes on St Kilda Rd/Brighton Rd, south of the Junction?
Do you support continuation of the hire e-scooter scheme in the City of Port Phillip?
Do you support better controls on where hire e-scooters can park, including mandatory scooter corrals in activity centres?
How well do you know active transport in your ward?
Imagine that you are travelling with a ten-year-old from point A to point B (choose the journey below that is in your ward). Choose an active transport mode (walking, cycling or scooting, or public transport), briefly describe the route, and comment on where Council could make improvements.
Describe your most notable contributions to date, in support of active transport. (For incumbent candidates, this can include council actions that you've championed. Otherwise it could include being part of a campaign, writing a letter to the editor, supporting a ride-to-school or work day ...)
Is there anything else that you want to tell us, or that you want us to share with our community?
How the ratings are made
Incumbents: will be rated on their actions in Council, with councillors who consistently supported the implementation of the ITS and other active transport issues (such as the pop-up trial) given 4 stars. Another * is available for councillors who actively engaged with the community via meetings, coming on rides and the like.
New candidates: will be rated on their survey responses and otherwise public intentions and actions. A fully supportive candidate will score 4 *, with another * on offer for candidates with a personal record of advocacy (eg speaking at Council meetings, being part of community groups and so on), or affiliated with a party that consistently supports active travel.
